Reasons to Use Facebook Ads (And When Not To)

Estimated Reading Time: 2 min

The marketing expert made it look easy. Run some ads, watch the sales roll in, rinse and repeat. So you log into Ads Manager — or spot that tempting Boost button right there on your post — and think, how hard can it be?

Pretty hard, as it turns out. And I say that as someone who spent years managing Meta ads for clients.

The truth is, Facebook ads can work brilliantly. But they work best in specific situations, and a lot of small business owners end up frustrated because nobody told them what those situations actually are. So let’s fix that.

When Facebook Ads Are Worth It

Think of ads as an amplifier, not a magic wand. They work when there’s already something working — you’re turning up the volume, not hoping the music will appear.

  • You’ve reached everyone you can organically. If you feel like you’re talking to the same people on repeat, ads can genuinely open up a new audience.
  • You want to grow your email list. Pairing a free resource — a guide, checklist, or template — with a lead generation ad is one of the smartest ways to spend ad budget.
  • You have a podcast and want more listeners. Organic podcast discovery is tough. Ads can give it a real nudge.
  • A post is already going gangbusters. If something’s getting great engagement without any spend behind it, that’s your green light to amplify. The content has already proven it resonates.
  • You want to stay front of mind with retargeting. Retargeting ads reach people who already know you — website visitors, email subscribers, past customers. These are often the highest-converting campaigns you can run.
  • You need bums in seats at an event. A webinar, workshop, or live event with a deadline? Ads are a great fit here.
  • Something is already selling well. If an offer is converting organically, ads can scale that momentum fast.

When to Leave the Wallet in Your Pocket

Here’s the part most “just run Facebook ads!” advice conveniently skips.

  • Nothing’s selling and you’re hoping ads will fix it. If an offer isn’t landing without paid traffic, showing it to more people usually just amplifies the problem. Ads don’t fix unclear messaging or an offer that’s not quite right yet.
  • A popular marketing expert said you should. Someone else’s strategy isn’t automatically yours. What works for a big audience or a different business model might do nothing for yours.
  • Your competitors are doing it, so you think you should too. Seeing a competitor’s ad in your feed tells you nothing about whether it’s actually working. Plenty of businesses run ads at a loss without realising it.

One Last Thing

Ads Manager has a real learning curve, and the platform shifts constantly. My honest take? Ads are best handled by someone who’s also across your organic social — they know your voice, your audience, and what’s already resonating.

If you’re looking to learn Facebook ads properly or want someone to handle it for you, I’d point you to The Digital Picnic — they’re the people I’d trust with this.

And if you’re curious about what I do, I help small and solo business owners with slow and steady organic SEO to build reach and authority, and email marketing to stay connected with the warm audience you already have. Both are long games — but they build something that doesn’t disappear the moment you stop paying for it.

The Boost button isn’t going anywhere. There’s no rush.
