Freelance Web Designer Melbourne

Beautiful websites are great. Websites that sell are better.

Hi, I’m Lou. Skip the bloated agency fees and confusing jargon. I partner directly with Melbourne businesses and practitioners to design, build, and support websites that turn your visitors into paying clients.

Lou was able to take control of the website design with such ease that I was left wondering why it took me so long to book! I never had a single concern about Lou’s vision during the project.

Why Hire an Australian Freelance Web Designer?

Hiring an offshore website designer might seem tempting at first, but it can lead to headaches later on, such as:

  • Your designer missed a GST-compliant checkout detail
  • The design isn’t built for your market specifically
  • You’re left waiting all weekend for a simple revision

Let your websites speak to your target audience by working with an Australian designer. I understand compliance requirements, cultural expectations, and buying behaviour. And all that helps your business convert more browsers into buyers.

Plus, working with a Melbourne-based designer means real-time communication during business hours. There will be no language barriers either. You get fast turnaround, clear communication, and a finished design that feels right. There’s no hand-holding required!

Tailored Web Design Services for Australian Businesses

I design custom websites around your specific goals and needs, not a recycled template that’s everywhere online.

Custom WordPress & Squarespace Development

  • I build fully custom websites from the ground up (Whether it’s a simple brochure site or a store with hundreds of products)
  • Your WordPress or Squarespace site will load fast, stay secure, and hold up long-term without constant maintenance headaches on your end
  • Once the project wraps up, you own 100% of the website, no strings attached

Responsive & Mobile-First Design

  • Your website will look great on every screen; I make sure it loads in its best shape on all devices (Desktop, phone, laptop, tablet)
  • I’ll optimise your website to load quickly, so you don’t lose potential customers because of slow loading speeds

SEO-Optimised Site Architecture

  • Whether you’re a retailer in Fitzroy, a service provider in the CBD, or a healthcare clinic in the outer east, search engine optimisation is a must
  • SEO puts your business on the map (Literally), attracting the right people, engaging them with powerful content, and converting them with persuasive copywriting
  • I structure every URL, page title, and heading the right way from the start, so search engines can find and rank your site with ease
  • Basic on-page SEO is woven into the build process itself, so your site is ready to compete in search results from the moment it launches

UX/UI Strategy

  • Before any design work begins, I map out exactly how your visitors will move through your site and what they’ll do at each step
  • Every button, layout, and visual element is placed with purpose, guiding your visitors toward the action that moves the needle for your business
  • Confused visitors don’t convert. A clear, intuitive design means more enquiries, more bookings, and more sales for you

Website Migrations & Platform Changes

Already have a website but want to move it to a better platform? I can help you rebuild and migrate your site so the transition is smooth and your content carries over cleanly.

I commonly handle migrations including:

  • WordPress to Squarespace
  • Squarespace to WordPress
  • Etsy to WooCommerce (WordPress)

For brochure and lead generation websites, I’m generally happy to rebuild onto either WordPress or Squarespace depending on what suits your goals and how comfortable you want to be managing it yourself.

For online stores and shopping cart websites, I work exclusively with WooCommerce — and only for Australian businesses. Running an online store in Australia comes with its own ecosystem of payment gateways, shipping integrations, and compliance considerations, and I work best when I know that landscape well.

If you’re set on Shopify, I won’t leave you stranded — I’ll refer you to a trusted colleague who specialises in it.

You get a ready-to-go website. I won’t hand it over until you’re completely happy with the result.

My Web Design Process

1. Strategy & Foundations — We Talk Business First

I don’t just ask for your logo and start building. First, we get to know your business. We’ll discuss your marketing plan, your target audience, and the specific goals we need this website to achieve. Every successful build is anchored to a clear business objective.

2. Home Page Prototype — You See It Before I Build It

Once I understand what we’re working toward, I design a detailed prototype of your home page. You get to see exactly how it’ll look and feel before any real development starts.

From there, we go through a simple feedback round — you tell me what you’d like changed, I make those changes, and we move forward. Keeping it to one focused round means the project stays on track and doesn’t drag on.

3. Full Site Development — I Build the Whole Thing

With the design locked in, I get to work building the full site. I’ve been doing this since 2011, and I write the code myself — no outsourcing, no junior developers handling your project while I supervise from a distance. When you hire me, you get me.

4. QA & Launch — Testing Before It Goes Live

Before anything goes public, I test everything thoroughly — how it looks on mobile, how it loads across different browsers, whether the SEO basics are in place. Once you’re happy, I handle the technical side of pushing it live.

5. Aftercare & Training — What Happens After Launch

Once the site is live, I don’t disappear. I’ll walk you through how to manage and update your site yourself, so you’re not dependent on me for every small change. And if something comes up down the track, you already know where to find me.

My Clients

My work tends to revolve around psychologists, coaches, and allied health providers — but I’m not limited to any one industry. What I’m really interested in is building websites that help you get found, build credibility, and bring in the right clients. If that sounds like what you need, we’ll probably get along well.

FAQs

What if I’m not tech-savvy?

You don’t need to be. My job is to handle the technical side so you don’t have to think about it.

What I do need from you is the stuff only you know — your business, your audience, what you want to say, and how you want your website to feel. Everything else is on me.

By the end of the project, you’ll have a website you can update yourself with confidence. That’s not a bonus — it’s the whole point. A website that’s easy for you to manage is a website that actually gets used.

How much does a freelance web designer in Melbourne cost?

Honestly, you’ll find prices all over the place — and it’s completely reasonable to feel confused by that.

At the lower end (think under $500), you might be looking at a loss-leader offer designed to get you in the door before upselling you on ongoing marketing services. Or it’s a quick turnaround with an AI-generated page that technically gives you “a website” — but hasn’t considered the strategy, structure, or user experience that make a website actually work for your business.

At the higher end, project costs often reflect things like custom software development, API integrations, professional copywriting, photography, or video production being bundled in.

My projects start from AUD $2,500–$3,000. That range covers a site that’s been thought through properly — built to load fast, show up in Google, and guide visitors toward making an enquiry or a purchase. There’s no upsell waiting around the corner, and no corners cut to get there.

If you’d like to know more, read my guide on how much you can expect to pay for a website in Australia.

Do you offer SEO services for local businesses?

Yes, SEO is typically built into every project, not bolted on at the end.

Every site I build is structured to rank well in search from the ground up. That includes technical SEO and optimising for the way people actually search today — including AI-powered search tools. If you want to keep building on that after launch, I offer ongoing SEO as an add-on.

How long does a typical web design project take?

Most projects take between 4 and 8 weeks from start to launch.

The first half is planning and design — working out the structure, layout, and flow. The second half is the build. The biggest factor in hitting the faster end of that timeline is you: having your content ready and turning around feedback quickly keeps things moving.

What website platform do you build on?

I specialise in WordPress and Squarespace. If you don’t have a preference, I’ll default to WordPress — it’s where I do my best work and gives most businesses the most flexibility long-term.

That said, if Squarespace is a better fit for your needs (or you simply prefer it), I’m happy to build there instead. I can also migrate an existing site from one platform to the other if you’re looking to make a switch.

The one thing I can’t help with is Wix or some of the other website builders — but if that’s what you need, I may be able to point you in the right direction.

Can you migrate my existing WordPress site to Squarespace (or vice versa)?

Yes — though migrations are typically treated as a new website project rather than a straight copy-and-paste. If you’re happy with how your current site looks, I’ll do my best to replicate the design in the new platform.

One thing worth knowing upfront: Squarespace is more restrictive with layouts than WordPress. If your existing design can’t be fully recreated within Squarespace’s constraints, I’ll take the lead on adapting it so everything works beautifully within the platform — no workarounds, no injected code to maintain down the track.

The trade-off is worth it. A website you can confidently update yourself will always serve you better than one that relies on custom scripts or developer intervention every time something needs to change.

What if I don’t know how my website should look or how many pages it should have?

That’s more common than you’d think — and it’s worth being upfront about. If you’re still figuring out your brand, your offer, or who you’re targeting, building a website right now might be putting the cart before the horse. A site works best when those foundations are already in place.

That said, I’m happy to take a look at where you’re at. Sometimes there’s enough to work with. If there isn’t, I’ll tell you honestly and point you in the right direction — whether that’s a brand designer or a business advisor first.

How will I know I’ll like the look of the website before it’s built?

Before anything gets built, we start with a Style Guide — a document that locks in your colours, fonts, and overall visual direction. You sign off on that first, so there are no surprises when the design comes together.

If you already have one, great. If not, I can connect you with a brand designer I work with who can put one together for you first.

Will I own my website once it’s finished?

Yes — completely. Once the final invoice is paid, you get full admin access to everything. No lock-in, no ongoing dependency on me. Think of it like building a house: I’m the architect and builder, but it’s your property when we’re done.

What kind of after-care do you provide once my site is live?

I provide hands-on support in the weeks after launch while you’re finding your feet. After that, I offer longer-term maintenance options if you want ongoing help.

Do you only work with people in Australia?

No, I’m happy to work with clients anywhere in the world! The only time location matters is if your site needs something that depends on local knowledge, like specific banking integrations or postage setups. For everything else, where you are doesn’t make a difference.
